The right natural stone for an Indian home depends less on the stone's name and more on where it will be used, how much water it will receive, how porous it is, what finish is applied, and how it is installed. A stone that performs well in a dry living room may not be suitable for a rain-exposed terrace or wet bathroom floor. For Indian homes, the best approach is therefore to select the stone, finish and installation method together rather than look for one “best” stone for every application.

Key Factors for the Indian Climate

Start with six questions: How much water will reach the surface? Can that water drain quickly? How porous is the stone? Will the surface become slippery when wet? What cleaning products will be used? And how will the stone be installed?

Water absorption is an important starting point. ASTM C97/C97M provides a test method for determining absorption and bulk specific gravity of dimension stone, while BIS IS 1124 covers water absorption, apparent specific gravity and porosity of natural building stones. These tests give useful information when comparing stones, but they do not by themselves determine whether a stone is suitable for a particular location.

The application matters just as much. A floor exposed to rain has different requirements from a bedroom floor. A shower floor needs different slip and maintenance considerations from a dry bathroom wall.

As an architect, I would therefore avoid choosing stone solely from a small showroom sample. Ask for information about the actual stone being supplied, its finish and its intended application.

Matching Stone to Regional Climates

There is no single stone that is automatically best for all regions. The more useful question is whether the stone and its installation can handle the location's repeated wetting, drying and cleaning.

Some area receives significant seasonal rainfall, so exterior areas such as terraces, balconies, entrance steps and garden paths need to be designed for water movement as well as material selection. The stone should not be considered separately from the slope, joints, drainage and surrounding construction.

This is particularly important on terraces. If rainwater remains around the stone or beneath the installation, even a suitable stone can develop staining, biological growth or other moisture-related problems. ASTM also maintains standards and guides covering properties and the selection and installation of dimension stone for different applications.

As an architect working on residential projects in Bangalore, I would not select natural stone based only on its appearance or the stone name. The location, water exposure, finish, drainage and maintenance requirements all need to be considered together.

Does dark stone get too hot to walk on in India?

Yes, on any surface that takes direct afternoon sun. A dark floor absorbs most of the sunlight landing on it and turns that into heat. A light one reflects more of the same sunlight and stays cooler. On a clear May afternoon in north and west India, where air temperature already crosses 42°C, a dark stone surface runs well past the point where bare skin is comfortable.

This matters in barefoot zones: terraces, pool surrounds, open courtyards, temple areas and balconies where the family walks without footwear. It matters far less for a covered verandah or an indoor floor.

Ask your supplier one question: how porous is this stone?

Not "is it good quality" — porosity. A supplier who works the quarry will tell you straight: this one takes water, that one doesn't, this one stains under a planter, that one is fine on an open terrace. A trader reading a price list won't be able to answer. Ask About Your Stone

Three things decide the outcome.

  • Colour: The lighter the surface, the lower the temperature. This is the biggest single variable and it is fixed at selection. No sealer or finish corrects it afterwards.
  • Shade: The same dark stone under a pergola, deep verandah or colonnade behaves differently from open sun. If the architecture already shades the area, the colour constraint relaxes. This is one reason material and facade design should be settled together rather than in sequence.
  • Movement: A surface swinging 30°C or more between night and afternoon expands and contracts more than an indoor floor. Joint width, joint filler and adhesive have to allow for it. Narrow, rigid joints on an exposed dark terrace are where lifting and edge chipping start.

If you want a dark stone on an exposed terrace, ask your supplier to leave a slab in the sun and check it at 3 pm before you commit.

Does the stone finish matter as much as the stone itself?

Yes. The finish can significantly change how a stone behaves underfoot.

The same stone can be polished, honed, flamed, brushed, leathered or left with a naturally cleft surface. A polished finish produces a smooth, reflective surface, while honed and more textured finishes generally provide a different surface character and can be more appropriate where wet-floor traction is a concern.

But “rougher” does not automatically mean safer. A highly textured floor can hold dirt and make cleaning more difficult. The correct finish therefore depends on slip risk, water exposure, cleaning requirements and how the space will be used.

Houzz's guidance on bathroom flooring similarly recommends considering textured natural stone finishes for wet areas and warns against polished marble or granite where wet conditions can increase slipperiness.

Which natural stone finish should you use for terraces and balconies?

For terraces and balconies, I would consider the finish and drainage before making the final material choice.

These areas receive direct rain, collect dust and may remain damp after rainfall. Entrance steps have an additional concern because people may walk on them with wet footwear. The surface therefore needs to be evaluated for wet slip performance rather than judged only by its appearance when dry.

Drainage is equally important. A terrace should not depend on the stone surface alone to move water away. Falls, joints, drains and edge details need to work together so that water does not remain trapped.

Is all natural stone suitable for bathroom floors?

Natural stone can be used in bathrooms, but the stone type and finish need to be selected for wet conditions.

A polished surface can become slippery when wet, which is why the floor finish should be assessed separately from the stone itself. Houzz's bathroom guidance recommends considering slip-resistant surfaces and notes that honed or tumbled natural stone can be appropriate depending on the application.

The shower floor deserves particular attention because it is exposed to water, soap and cleaning products. A stone that looks suitable in a dry bathroom may not provide the same experience in a constantly wet shower area.

A 4-inch sample won't tell you what arrives.

Can you use the same stone indoors and outdoors?

Not necessarily.

Using the same stone indoors and outdoors can create visual continuity, but the two locations do not expose the material to the same conditions. An interior floor may be protected from direct rain, mud and biological growth, while an outdoor floor is repeatedly exposed to moisture, dirt and weather.

The finish may also need to change. A polished finish that works visually in a living room may not be appropriate for a rain-exposed balcony.

This is why I would not approve an outdoor application simply because the same stone has already worked successfully inside a house.

Does sealing make natural stone suitable for any climate?

No. Sealing can help reduce staining and moisture penetration, depending on the stone and sealer, but it does not turn an unsuitable stone into a suitable one.

This distinction is often missed during material selection. If a terrace has poor drainage, a bathroom has an inappropriate finish, or a stone is chemically sensitive to the cleaning products being used, sealing cannot solve the underlying design problem.

The correct sequence is material selection → finish selection → installation detailing → appropriate protection and maintenance.

What mistakes should homeowners avoid when selecting natural stone?

The first mistake is choosing a stone only because it looks good in a showroom.

The second is asking only for the stone category. “Marble”, “granite” or “slate” describes a broad material category; individual stones can differ in absorption, strength, finish and appearance. Testing standards such as ASTM C97/C97M and BIS IS 1124 exist precisely because measurable properties matter when comparing natural stones.

The third mistake is assuming that sealing eliminates maintenance.

The fourth is ignoring installation. Poor falls, inadequate drainage, unsuitable joints or trapped moisture can cause problems that are later blamed entirely on the stone.

The fifth is using acidic cleaning products on acid-sensitive stones. Houzz notes that marble can be affected by acidic food and cleaning products, and recommends appropriate cleaning and sealing practices.

What should you answer before you finalise a natural stone?

No supplier's answer should be taken at face value.. What survives that bias is your own answer to the questions below. Write them down before you sign anything, and take the same list to every supplier you're comparing.

  1. Where exactly does this stone go, and how wet does it get: dry, occasionally wet, or wet every day?
  2. When water lands on it, where does it go? Name the fall, the joint and the drain. If you can't name all three, the problem isn't the stone.
  3. Does the surface face the afternoon sun, and will anyone walk on it barefoot in May?
  4. How far away will you normally stand from it? At three metres a busy vein reads as noise; at fifteen it reads as nothing at all.
  5. What water will wash it: municipal, tanker or borewell? Hard water marks light stone.
  6. Who cleans it, how often, and with what? Get the actual product name, not "mild cleaner".
  7. If one slab cracks in year five, can you get a matching replacement? Ask which quarry, which lot, and how much of that lot is left.
  8. Have you seen a full-size piece, in daylight, wet? A 4×4 inch showroom sample tells you almost nothing about a 3-metre floor.
  9. On site, who owns the joint between waterproofing and stone? If nobody is named, that joint is where the failure will start.
  10. Which areas deserve the budget, and which are you overspending on out of habit?

The goal is not to find the hardest, most expensive or most popular stone. It is to find a stone and finish that suits the location, exposure, construction detail and maintenance expectations

For residential projects, material selection works best when it is considered alongside the architectural design rather than after the design is complete.

Conclusion

On an exposed terrace in direct sun, yes, uncomfortably so for bare feet through the Indian summer. Use a lighter stone, or shade the area with a pergola or verandah. Dark stone works fine on covered terraces and on vertical cladding, where nobody stands on it.
