HOW TO CALCULATE GRANITE FOR KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS
Material required for a countertop involves calculating the total surface area of the countertop, considering its shape and dimensions.
Identify the shape and dimensions, then break irregular layouts into simpler rectangles for measuring.
- Identify the shape and dimensions of the countertop.
- Divide irregular shapes into simpler sections (rectangles or squares) and take the dimensions of each section/piece.
- Calculate the area of each section.
- Add the areas together to find the total surface area.
Step 1: Select the Countertop Shape
Choose a countertop shape. An image will display to help you visualize it.
- L-Shape
- U-Shape
- I-Shape (Straight Countertop)
- Parallel / Galley Platform
- Island Countertop
Step 2: Select the Unit of Measurement
Step 3: Input Dimensions
- L-Shape Countertop: Enter the Length and Width for Rectangle 1 (R1), Rectangle 2 (R2), and/or Rectangle 3 (R3). The calculator will sum the areas.
- U-Shape Countertop: Enter the Length and Width for the Right Rectangle, Central Rectangle, and Left Rectangle. The total area is the sum of all rectangles.
- I-Shape Countertop: Enter the Length and Width of the single rectangle representing the countertop.
- Island Countertop: Enter the Length and Width of the island rectangle.
- Galley/Parallel: Enter the Length and Width for the two rectangles representing parallel counters.
Step 4: View Total Material Area
The calculator displays total area in square feet and square meters, based on the selected unit.
Step 5: Use the Results
- Use the total area to determine the quantity of countertop material required.
- Tip: Add 10%-15% for cutting and fitting wastage when purchasing materials.
